EFT: A Group Experience

By Brian Rohr

This past winter, I drove out to Port Ludlow, WA to show a documentary called The Tapping Solution about EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques.  EFT is a modality that has altered the way I understand the potential of healing.  Sometimes simply called “Tapping” or “Meridian Tapping,” EFT involves tapping your fingertips on various acupressure points while repeating key phrases.  The purpose being to release the emotional causes of physical distress, past hurts, trauma, negative or uncomfortable emotions (hatred, anger, fear…) and the difficult issues that come up in one’s life.

What makes this modality so impressive is the ease with which it can be applied by one’s self or with another.  Couple this with the truly magical transformations that can occur and we have an amazing tool for our times.  Time and time again I have witnessed clients, friends as well as myself, move through deeply held patterns, beliefs and emotions within a few sessions, or as quickly as a few minutes.  By accessing the meridian system – the pathways through which energy moves through the body – and using tapping to help release any disturbances in the system, profound change often happens in a quick and non-invasive way.

Tapping Groups

As the afternoon in Port Ludlow came to an end, someone brought up the idea of forming a “Tapping Group.”  This would be a gathering where a group of people would come together in order to offer support, and allow the synergy of the group’s energy to aid in the healing process. The “Tapping Group” would allow for the ongoing practice of this amazing modality.

The idea of using EFT or Tapping in a group is a remarkable one.  While there are obviously many benefits of having a personal, one on one session with a practitioner, there are just some things that can happen in a group setting that does not happen by one’s self or in a private session.

1) Support.  One of the most noticeable areas of what a group can offer is their support.  Through sharing what is happening (tension at work, struggle with abundance, relationship issues) and having everyone tap along with you, there is an amazing feeling of not being alone, of being understood and of being held, cared for and of encouragement.

2) Synergy.  There is a magic that I, as well as other practitioners, have witnessed time and again when a group of people all support someone by tapping along with them. It seems as if the “group energy” helps resolve or ease the issue much faster. The intensity of a problem can often be reduced with ease by the synergy in the room.

3) Borrowing Benefits.  Another source of amazement and delight when tapping in a group setting is something that has been called Borrowing Benefits.  This means that when tapping in support of another person, possibly on an issue completely different than your own, it is often noticed that the intensity of your own, personal issue diminishes or disappears.

A group was formed

The Port Ludlow group that came out of that introduction to EFT began to meet regularly for four weeks.  Through this gathering, we each delved deep into what was holding us back in our own lives. Through the support, synergy and the “borrowing benefits” we began the journey of coming closer to living our lives with power, meaning and purpose.  This is one of the great potentials of EFT, using it to let go of whatever is holding us back from living out our dreams.  And seeing what can transpire from that place is a (w)holy different way to live.

Given this understanding, one can see why EFT has quickly become a very valuable part of one’s self-help toolkit. We can see how and why EFT is being used in homes, schools, hospitals and practices throughout the country and world.  Either in group, during a session or on your own, exploring the world of EFT is a gift to that part of us that has always dreamed to be bigger than we dare to admit.  Now isn’t that the type of support worth receiving?
